Nuclear Radiation Sensors

Automatic Background Reduction (150)

High purity germanium (HPGe) detector Technology suited for integration into existing commercial products.

Problem: Radiation background in high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors obscures valuable signals

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Sensors & Devices through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Investigated charge collection mechanisms in HPGe detectors
  • Reduced background (by 3X) using algorithm to sort pulses based on number of interactions in detector
  • Implemented algorithm using digital electronics that works with any commercial HPGe detector

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Nuclear measurement design, high-speed analog electrical engineering, custom radiation transport simulation, circuit simulation, finite element analysis, Fourier analysis, high-speed parallel computation (Beowulf), ultra-low-level radioassay.
