Problem: Radiation background in high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors obscures valuable signals

PNNL Solution:
- Investigated charge collection mechanisms in HPGe detectors
- Reduced background (by 3X) using algorithm to sort pulses based on number of interactions in detector
- Implemented algorithm using digital electronics that works with any commercial HPGe detector
Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Nuclear measurement design, high-speed analog electrical engineering, custom radiation transport simulation, circuit simulation, finite element analysis, Fourier analysis, high-speed parallel computation (Beowulf), ultra-low-level radioassay.
