Nuclear Radiation Sensors

Flight Crew Radiation Dosimeter (138)

Equipment

Problem: Need equipment to measure natural, high altitude radiation exposure for aircraft and space craft personnel

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Integrated Systems

PNNL Solution:

  • Developed sensor that measures biologically effective radiation dose
  • Developed small, lightweight instrument system to record in-flight radiation measurements
  • Commercialized instrument
  • Instruments have flown on Shuttle and MIR space missions and US airlines
  • Underlying technology was recognized with a 1984 FLC Award.
