Analytical Design of Nuclear Sensors (353)

Problem: Need methods to optimize design and predict sensor performance to reduce technical risks for new sensor designs.

PNNL Solution:

  • Use analytical models to evaluate sensor configuration performance at practical operating conditions
  • Evaluate various design options to determine optimal design
  • Predict sensor performance including effects of background radiation sources
  • Provide major technical risk reduction before fabrication

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Monte Carlo computational modeling to evaluate sensor design and configuration options with proper accounting for statistical nature of radiation decay phenomena; background radiation discrimination methods including passive and active shielding options; signal processing options including coincidence requirements and background reduction using anti-coincidence and energy threshold event discrimination methods; evaluation of natural background radiation sources effects including cosmic rays, soil and atmospheric constituents, etc.; evaluation of counter construction materials.
