Problem: Need rapid, non-destructive method to measure hardening depth and gradient of treated steel parts.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Interaction Mechanisms through Measurement & Analysis Method Development.

PNNL Solution:

  • Hardening modifies the micro-structure of treated steels
  • Microstructural changes result in reduction of ultrasonic energy scattering from hardened zones
  • Experimentally determine relationship between material hardening and ultrasonic effects
  • Effect provides a reliable basis for rapid, non-destructive QA tests.

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Material property characterization; acoustic interactions with steel for a variety of ultrasonic frequencies and beam characteristics; analog and digital electronics development; signal analysis to establish correlation between material properties and acoustic measurement data.
