Actinide Concentration from Solutions (422)

Problem: Selectively capture/concentrate actinide materials from aqueous solutions to improve detection and trace forensics.

Project Activity Scope (from Technical Overview Chart): Mechanisms through Sensors and Devices.

PNNL Solution:

  • Developed nano-scale monolayer materials tailored to capture targeted actinide materials
  • Formed macro-scale thin film structures (~10-2m) using mono-layers while maintaining actinide preconcentration performance
  • Demonstrated preconcentration of target actinides greater than 106 from water samples

Capabilities Employed to Meet Client Needs: Material science (including self-assembling monolayers, ceramic materials, etc.); chemistry including surface chemistry and molecular interactions; molecular recognition mechanics; materials processing into specific morphologies (e.g., membranes, thin films, capillaries, etc.); materials characterization.
